In my late teens my father made me the manager of 5 fast food restaurants.  Thinking back…my education was stellar.

How many people get the chance to learn how to hire, fire and lead a team of people at such an early age?  I witnessed firsthand the issues that cause so many business owners pain and sleepless nights. After one year my father took my management experience to the next level.  He sent me to franchise school for salons.  My father was a franchise developer for several states.  He sent me off to train other franchisees in sales, marketing and building teams.  The number one complaint I heard from franchisees was employee issues.  Every one of them had a hard time finding good people, hiring the right person and keeping them once they were hired.

I felt their pain.  I knew all too well the frustration with high turnover.  You and I both know that it takes building a strong team to grow your business to new levels.  I learned as a teenager…my family was not in the fast food business or the hair styling business…we were in the people business.  Our business was supported by people that purchased our products and services and it was run by the people that followed our systems and methods. When my father finally chose to sell his franchises, I decided to spread my wings and venture out on my own.  I opened a vacuum cleaner store.  My first year in business I sold from a tiny bedroom apartment until I saved up enough money to open up the store.   When people hear my story they begin to laugh.  I tell them I was laughing too…all the way to the bank!  I made more money in two days than I made in one month for my dad.

I learned how to sell and quickly realized that the faster I duplicated myself the more money I could make and the quicker I could lease a space for my business.  I began putting ads in the paper for sales people.  I held my interviews at a local donut shop.   I had so many calls I had to hire someone just to help me answer the phone.  Then I got so bogged down interviewing that I was unable to find the time to go out and sell my product so my revenues began to decline.  I thought there has got to be a better way… So I made a script to read every time I got a call.  This script allowed me to sort through all of the people that I would never hire in the first place.  Then I realized that with every interview I would just repeat everything that I said in the 30 other interviews I held that week.  So I decided to bring everyone in at once and give them all the information at the same time.  I always told them about the product they would be selling and I told them how passionate I was about my business.  I began to notice that during my interviews…my interviewees wanted to buy my product and gave me referrals and I began selling to their friends too!

I began to make sales and get a ton of referrals by holding these interviews.  I knew I was onto something…

There were months I just wanted to hold an interview…not because I needed staff but because I loved the sales that came with the process every time I did it.  My sales team beat international records for vacuum sales not once, not twice but 8 times.  I typically ran a sales staff of 35 people.  I had a telemarketing room of 4 phone operators.  I had a secretary and a service person.  I was able to build such a successful team because of my unique and fool proof way of hiring.
